At least five million trademarks are registered around the world. Which makes it increasingly difficult to own that new brand name you covet.
But that hurdle pales in comparison to going after a new URL.
According to Verisign Inc., a global leader in domain names and Internet security, the total number of registered domain names surged to 314 million by the end of 2015.
Nearly 26 million new domains were added last year. If you’re keeping score, that’s more than 71,000 new URLs every day.
The most popular format? Dot-com names continued to lead the pack, with about 40% of all domains. Dot-net names tally about 5%.
